ADIDAS SHOES - 5 FUN FACTS

  • It is said that Adidas got its name from the acronym All Day I Dream About Sport. But that’s not true. The brand is named after its founder, Adolf Dassler. He combined his nickname, Adi, with the first three letters of his last name.
  • The brand was founded in 1949 by Adolf Dassler. But the story actually began in 1924 when Dassler founded Gebrüder Dassler Schuhfabrik. It had to close when he fell out with his brother, who later founded Puma.
  • The sports brand today has millions of dedicated fans worldwide. Some are almost too dedicated! In Boston, there was once a park called Adidas Park. There, it wasn’t risk-free to run in a pair of Puma or Nike sneakers. It often happened that the “forbidden” sneakers were snatched by Adidas fans. Then the shoes were hung in a tree, where the unlucky owner had to retrieve them later.
  • American sports star Jesse Owens wore Adidas shoes at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. The Olympics were meant to prove the superiority of the Aryan race. But that didn’t happen. Jesse Owens – who was the grandson of a black slave – won four gold medals. Even in the German-made sports shoes! In 1970, Jesse Owens was inducted into the sports Hall of Fame. His records stood for almost 50 years. It wasn’t until 1984 that Carl Lewis came close to the times the star runner had achieved.
  • The brand’s limited edition Adidas shoes are immediately snapped up by collectors and sneakerheads.
