Birkenstock

THE HISTORY OF BIRKENSTOCK

Birkenstock sandals have a long and fascinating history dating back to Johann Adam Birkenstock, who was registered as a shoemaker in 1774. The company has since evolved through generations and has changed the shoe industry with their innovative foot-shaped footbeds and high-quality footwear focused on comfort.

EARLY YEARS

The brand traces its roots back to Johann Adam Birkenstock, known as a shoemaker in the small German village of Langen-Bergheim in 1774. In 1896, Johann's great-grandchild, Konrad Birkenstock, developed the first contoured insole that could be used by shoemakers to make shoes to individual measurements.

INTRODUCTION TO THE USA

Margot Fraser, a German dressmaker living in California, decided to travel back to Germany to visit a spa in Bavaria. There she was recommended a pair of Birkenstock sandals to help with a foot condition caused by tight footwear. Due to Fraser's enthusiasm for the sandals and her relief from her foot condition, Birkenstocks were introduced in the USA in 1966.

EXPANSION AND PRESENT DAY

After founding the trading company Birkenstock Footprint Sandals, Inc. in Novato, California, it was later renamed Birkenstock Distribution USA, Inc. (BDUSA) in 2005. In 2007, the owners of Birkenstock Orthopädie GmbH & Co. KG bought their long-standing distribution partner BDUSA.

In 2018, Birkenstock received PETA's Libby Award for being the most animal-friendly shoe company.

BIRKENSTOCK MODELS AND MATERIALS

Birkenstock sandals and shoes come in various models and materials to suit every taste and preference. Some of the most popular models include Boston, Gizeh, Madrid, and Milano.

MATERIALS

Birkenstock's premium sandals and shoes can be made from different materials, which often determine the price of each model. The upper can vary in material, while the sole is constructed almost the same way across all models.

The upper is most often made of:

- Leather (nubuck, suede, or skin)

- Birko-flor (synthetic material developed by Birkenstock)

The sole consists of several different layers:

- EVA (a lightweight plastic product)

- Natural latex

- Cork

- Jute (natural textile fiber)

- Suede

BIRKENSTOCK SIZES AND WIDTH SELECTION

It is important to choose the right size and width to get the most comfort and support from your pair of Birkenstock sandals.

SIZE GUIDE

Birkenstock sandals and shoes generally run large, so many find they need to go down a full size. To find the right size, you can measure your foot from heel to toe and check your size in a size guide.

WIDE OR NARROW MODEL (NARROW VS REGULAR)

Birkenstock sandals and shoes come in two widths: Regular and narrow. Most feet fit the regular width, but if you have a very narrow foot, you should choose the narrow version.

SOFT FOOTBED VS. ORIGINAL FOOTBED

Besides the original footbed, Birkenstock also offers a soft footbed, which consists of an extra foam layer under the suede layer. This makes the sandal more comfortable to wear from the start, but some believe it affects the fit of the footwear.

CARE, CLEANING, AND WASHING

Over time, your sandals' footbed will need cleaning. Follow these steps to clean your Birkenstock sandals:

Remove all dirt with a suede brush.

Clean the footbed with water mixed with dish soap or soap flakes and a toothbrush.

Let the sandal dry – avoid very high heat and direct sunlight.

BIRKENSTOCK IN HIGH FASHION

Several fashion houses have collaborated with Birkenstock to create unique and exclusive versions of their popular sandals. Designers Phoebe Philo, Giambattista Valli, and Givenchy have all created their own versions of Birkenstock sandals.

BIRKENSTOCK EVA

Birkenstock has introduced a lightweight, waterproof sandal called Birkenstock EVA, made from a material called ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA). These sandals are a cheaper alternative to the original cork Birkenstock sandals.
